End of an Era

With the win in Monza, Schumi has confirmed his retirement from the world of Motor Sports. So does an end come to one of the most successful runs in Formula 1. For records schumi has won the drivers title 7 times. He has an outstanding record of 90 wins, 153 podium finishes to his credit. Such has been his dominance that there aren’t many records which are not under his name.

Its hard to predict how motor sport will shape after his exit. As some one quoted, “what will happen to Tour De France once Lance Quits? – Ans: It will be a race again”. Formula 1 will probably be more competitive again or I might turn out to be totally one sided affairs dominated by an Alonso or Kimi or Kubica ?

I have always sided with the under dogs, and its no secret that I no great fan of Schumi either. For some reason I have always sided the under dogs. For I believe it’s the under dogs who make the sports likeable. They are the ones who bring the element of unpredictability which is makes sports affable. I like the likes of Safin or Nadal who on their day can wave the sternest of challenges with ease . Sport would become boring if one person were to reign supreme, Fedrerer, Sampras, Tiger Woods, Lance Armstrong all great champions, no technical flaws and they have almost achieved perfection. But what good is it to watch a match where you know the result before you switch on the TV.

It would be perhaps the first time in 6 years since I started following F1, I would want Schumi to win the Drivers. I think with only 2 points separating him and Alonso, there is a greater chance that Schumi will pull it off. I have the faintest of doubts that Schumi will put his heart and soul to end on his career on a successful note.

All I can say that the year 2006 has been the year of retirements. Zidane, Agassi, Navratilova, Davenport and now Schumi. None of greats till now have been able to exit on a victorious note. I am hoping Schumi could break this jinx and retire with the driver title. That should be the most befitting present to a great champion.

agreed challengers make the game unpredictable and interesting... but its the class of the champion that makes it beautiful!
its the class of the champion that pushes the sport to the limit... you could make that out by reading the article on federer... how did he reverse the stringing formula of the rackets and made others follow in his footsteps.. and there are others ... how tendulkars batting ability inspired so many indian batsmen to use heavy bats and bat without too much caution .. how imran and wasim and other pakistanis changed the art of swing bowling .. how adam gilchrist made the world believe that a wktkeeper can be your best batsman too... how a sunil gavaskar inspired the whole nation that you can beat the best in their grounds if you just do your thing right...
same goes for maradona and pele ... dhanraj pillay... its some inspired wizardry in their respective games that makes people learn the skill...

@swaroop:Tough Choice, but i think i will stick with Mclaren. Fans can crib all but i guess they'll stay with the team - thick n thin.

@Mugs: I concur with your views, but as a spectator the game charm dwindles if its always lop-sided. Lets not compare sachin and fedrerer,he has as many chinks in his armour as a kid who has lost his first set of milk tooth.

@Dips: Amrica mein hai thoda consolation dede Lindsay ke liye.
